How to Create Habits to improve your life!

Habits can improve our lives in so many ways whether its improving relationships, careers, personal development or health.

We all have good intentions but it can be really hard to sustain new lifestyle choices after the initial desire and euphoria fades.

It is nothing to do with willpower, it is to do with HABIT and retraining your brain.

New habits don’t happen overnight, you have to plan and prepare to include them in your daily life.

How to make Habits stick

Start Small

What is your goal? Now break it down. Now break it down again! You need to create small achievable steps. Steps which show progress and give you cause to celebrate.

Track your progress

As you achieve your small goals have a way of recording this. Use a visual reminder, tick chart, calendar you can mark off. Become addicted to adding the next mark to make a chain of achievement. Use the compound effect to create momentum.

Be clear with yourself

  • Make a date in your diary
  • Book the class
  • Set a time

Don’t forget to start small though. If you want to walk for 30 minutes a day but can’t see how you are going to fit it in, start with 5-10 minutes. Can you multi-task your time, call a friend or relative you have been meaning to catch up with, listen to a podcast or auto book?

Make sure your environment supports your new habits

  • Clear unhealthy food choices from your home and work space
  • Leave workout gear out the night before or pack your gym bag for the next day
  • Establish a good morning and evening routine to help prepare for your day and reduce decision fatigue.

Don’t be negative with yourself

Change negative self-talk into positive. Use the word BUT to change your sentences such as ‘I will never be able to achieve xyz BUT if I start with abc, I’ll get there’. Rather than take things away from your life, crowd out the negative by adding more positive.

Have a trigger

  • Upon waking, make a large glass of warm lemon water to drink.
  • While brushing your teeth do some squats
  • When making coffee listen to an inspirational book or podcast.

Attach a new habit to your current routine, for instance a short exercise routine before you get in the shower, meditate or journal before getting into bed at the end of the day.

Why?

Know why you are wanting to create new habits. What will these new habits give you?

  • More time?
  • Health?
  • Work/Life Balance?
  • A way to achieve your dreams?

Write these down and refer to them when you are struggling. Make notes to remind you, leave them on your fridge or the bathroom mirror, somewhere where you will be reminded regularly what all your hard work is for.

Conclusion

It is going to take effort to create the Lifestyle that you desire but by implementing routines and strategies and creating Habits you can make anything possible.
