Why Meal Plans Don’t Work in Menopause (And Why a Menopause Pantry Does)

I like to think I’m a very organised person.

The truth is, I love organising… I’m just not always brilliant at the follow-through.

Meal plans are a perfect example.

I love creating them.

But somehow they never seem to stick.

  • Monday goes well.
  • Tuesday I don’t fancy what’s on the plan.
  • Wednesday something unexpected crops up.
  • Thursday I’m missing a crucial ingredient (someone has probably eaten it!).
  • Friday? “Shall we just get a takeaway?”

Then the weekend arrives, and another carefully planned week has disappeared.

Sound familiar?

If you’re navigating menopause, you’re not alone.

The problem isn’t a lack of willpower, and it isn’t because you’re bad at meal planning.

It’s because meal plans assume your body, your energy, your appetite and your life are all wonderfully predictable.

Menopause isn’t.

Our energy changes. Our sleep changes. Our cravings change. Life gets busy. Plans change.

For years I blamed myself for not sticking to the plan.

Now I realise the problem wasn’t me.

It was the meal plan.

And once I stopped trying to follow a rigid menu and started building what I now call my Menopause Pantry, everything became so much easier.

Why Menopause Changes the Way We Eat

One of the biggest myths we’re sold is that if we just plan better, we’ll eat better.

However, menopause doesn’t work to a perfectly planned schedule.

Some mornings you wake up feeling hungry and full of energy. Other days you’re tired before breakfast. Some evenings you crave a colourful salad, while others you need something warm and comforting.

None of that means you’re failing.

It means your body is constantly adapting.

Throughout menopause, changing hormones, disrupted sleep, stress and daily life all influence your appetite, your energy and even the foods that appeal to you.

Trying to force yourself to eat exactly what was written on a meal plan three days ago often creates frustration instead of nourishment.

This is where I believe we’ve got things the wrong way round.

Rather than asking, “How can I stick to my meal plan?”, a better question is:

“What does my body need today?”

That doesn’t mean eating biscuits because you’ve had a stressful afternoon.

It means understanding the signals your body is giving you and having the right ingredients available to respond with nourishing, real food.

Menopause isn’t asking you to become more disciplined. It’s asking you to become more connected to your body.

Menopause Doesn’t Need More Rules. It Needs More Nourishment.

For decades, many of us have been taught to think about food through the lens of diet culture.

  • Count the calories.
  • Cut the carbs.
  • Earn your treats.
  • Start again on Monday.

Sound familiar?

It’s so ingrained that we barely notice it.

We talk about “burning off” a meal or being “good” or “bad” depending on what we’ve eaten.

But what does eating healthy actually mean?

Somewhere along the way, we’ve become disconnected from our body’s own wisdom.

We’ve learnt to trust food rules instead of listening to our bodies.

The truth is, your body doesn’t simply count calories. It relies on nutrients to make hormones, repair tissues, support your brain, protect your bones and keep every system working as it should.

This is why menopause can feel like such a wake-up call.

As hormone levels change, your body’s nutrient demands change too. Suddenly, the eating habits that seemed to work in your thirties and forties no longer leave you feeling energised or well.

Menopause doesn’t create the problem, it often shines a spotlight on it.

Many women are well fed but undernourished, living on foods that fill them up without providing the nutrients their changing bodies are crying out for.

That’s why I believe menopause doesn’t need another set of food rules.

It needs more nourishment.

Your Body Can Only Build With What You Give It

Have you ever stopped to think about what your body is made from?

Every cell, every hormone, every enzyme and every neurotransmitter has been built using the nutrients from the food you’ve eaten.

Your body isn’t asking for perfection.

It’s asking for the raw materials it needs to do its job.

  • Protein provides the building blocks for muscle, skin and many hormones.
  • Healthy fats help support hormone production and brain health.
  • Vitamins, minerals and antioxidants keep thousands of chemical reactions happening every single day without you ever having to think about them.

Your body is incredibly clever.

It knows how to heal, repair and adapt but it can only work with what you give it.

Imagine trying to build a house without enough bricks, timber or cement.

No matter how skilled the builder is, the finished house won’t be as strong as it could be.

Your body is no different.

Menopause increases the demands on many of our body’s systems.

  • Bone health
  • Muscle maintenance
  • Digestive systems
  • Detox pathways
  • Brain function
  • Blood sugar balance

All become more important, which means nourishing your body becomes more important too.

That’s why I encourage women to stop asking, “What shouldn’t I eat?” and start asking, “What can I add to nourish my body today?”

It’s a small change in mindset, but it changes everything.

What Is a Menopause Pantry?

When I talk about a Menopause Pantry, I’m not just talking about the tins in your cupboard or what’s sitting in your fridge.

I’m talking about creating a kitchen that works for you instead of against you.

A Menopause Pantry is built around nourishing ingredients that support your changing body and make it easy to put together balanced meals, even on the busiest days.

Because let’s be honest, life doesn’t always go to plan.

Some days you have the time and energy to cook from scratch. Other days you’re exhausted, running late or simply don’t feel like cooking. That’s normal.

A well-stocked Menopause Pantry takes away the pressure of having to follow a rigid meal plan. Instead, it gives you the flexibility to respond to what your body needs in that moment.

When you always have a source of protein, healthy fats, fibre-rich foods and colourful fruit and vegetables on hand, you can create simple, nourishing meals without overthinking them.

There’s no guilt if Tuesday’s dinner becomes Wednesday’s lunch.

There’s no panic because you’ve forgotten one ingredient.

There’s no need to start again on Monday.

Instead of asking, “What’s on the meal plan?”, you begin asking, “What can I make with the nourishing foods I already have?”

That one shift changes everything.

It gives you confidence in the kitchen, reduces food waste, saves time and helps you nourish your body consistently, not perfectly.

Because consistency will always support your health better than perfection.

So Why Do I Still Create Meal Plans?

You might be wondering…

“If meal plans don’t work, why do you create them?”

It’s a fair question.

The truth is, meal plans aren’t the problem. It’s believing they’re the only answer.

Some women genuinely thrive with structure. They enjoy knowing exactly what they’re eating each day and happily follow a plan from start to finish. If that’s you, brilliant!

A meal plan can take away decision fatigue and make life much simpler.

I also include meal plans because they’re packed with nourishing recipes. Even if you don’t follow them day by day, they provide inspiration and help you discover meals that can become part of your regular routine.

But here’s the important part…

We’re not robots.

We’re cyclical beings.

Our energy changes. Our schedules change. Our appetite changes. Life changes.

Some weeks you’ll enjoy following a plan. Other weeks you’ll need flexibility.

Neither is right or wrong.

The goal isn’t to fit your life around a meal plan.

The goal is to have resources that support your life, whatever season you’re in.

That’s exactly why the Menopause Pantry comes first.

Once your kitchen is stocked with nourishing ingredients, you can use a meal plan when it serves you and step away from it when it doesn’t without feeling like you’ve failed.

The Menopause Doula SHIFT Framework

After working with so many women navigating menopause, I noticed something interesting.

Although every woman’s symptoms are different, the foundations are remarkably similar.

Many are exhausted.

They’re stressed.

They’re overwhelmed by conflicting advice.

They’ve spent years following diets, ignoring their body’s signals and living at a pace that leaves very little room for nourishment.

They’re looking for one magic food, one supplement or one quick fix.

But lasting change doesn’t usually begin there.

It begins by rebuilding the foundations.

That’s why I created my Menopause Doula SHIFT Framework.

It’s designed to simplify the noise and help women reconnect with their bodies, one step at a time.

Together we focus on creating strong foundations through nourishing food, supporting hormone health, reducing unnecessary toxins where we can, managing stress, improving sleep and learning to listen to the unique messages your body is sending you.

My role isn’t to make you dependent on me.

It’s to guide you back to trusting yourself.

Just like a doula offers support, knowledge and reassurance through a life transition, my aim is to help you find your own way.

And if life throws you off course, as it inevitably will, you’ll know exactly how to find your way back, with confidence and without guilt.

Because that’s what sustainable health looks like.
