What makes a good mum?
We all have different ideas about what makes us a ‘Good Mum’.
This can be formed around our own experience of being mothered. This may have been a good experience, one you want to emulate or not so good and you want to do the opposite.
There is also A LOT of noise from outside sources, people you put on a pedestal that you want to parallel, parenting books and magazines and social media to name a few.
I am a mum and a step mum. I was also a childminder for 15 years and have seen many mums in action. I have witnessed my friend’s style of parenting and other parents at the school gates.
Now as a Nutrition Therapist I support mums to feel their best, overcome tiredness and fatigue, stress less and put themselves first occasionally.
Today I want to encourage mums to put themselves first more often. You have to put your own oxygen mask on before helping others!
Words to describe a Good Mum
In my research, these are some of the top words used when describing what a good mum is;
- Kind
- Caring
- Supportive
- Loving
- Good listener
- Nurturing
I also think a good mum should apply these words to herself…
A Good Mum is Kind
Be kind to yourself.
Let go of perfection. Done is good enough.
Talk to and about yourself with respect. Those little ears listening need to hear kind words about themselves and the people they love.
Practice positive affirmations. I am good enough.
Caring
Do you take care of yourself?
Children observe everything we do, even subconsciously. What better way to teach them the importance of taking care of themselves than leading by example.
How can you take care of yourself every day?
- A good skincare routine
- Eating well balanced real food
- Make time for movement
- Do something you enjoy
Self-care over self-comfort!
Supportive
Support yourself to be the best you can be.
Do you need to make time for an exercise class or a daily walk? Perhaps you would like to take up a hobby or learn a language.
Maybe you have been promising yourself you will get healthier but you don’t know where to start, there is so much conflicting information out there and everything you have tried in the past no longer works. Give me a call 😊
A Good Mum is a Good Listener
Listen to your body every day, what is it trying to tell you?
Practice meditation or keep a journal (I am loving writing morning pages at the moment).
Tune in to your inner voice.
Loving
Accept yourself for who you are now, even if you want to ‘lose weight’ or ‘need to get fit’ accept where you are now and talk to and about yourself kindly.
Make a plan to improve the areas you want to by all means just accept where you are now and acknowledge all the wonderful things your body does every day.
Showing your child you love yourself will show them how to do the same to you and themselves.
Set personal boundaries, learn to say no or not now.
A Good Mum is Nurturing
Nurturing is the act of providing food, protection and encouragement. How can you do this for yourself every day?
- Eat nourishing foods
Ensure you are eating at least 3 balanced meals a day. Don’t restrict or deprive yourself, this leads to poor energy, tiredness and low moods.
- Protect your body from disease
Eating and sleeping well along with managing stress and taking care of your emotional health will allow you to perform at your highest level.
- What can you do to encourage yourself?
Set goals and celebrate the small stuff, work on a more positive mindset – start with what you are grateful for. Talk to yourself as you would a friend.
To all the Good Mums
Happy Mothers Day!
