Personally I have never been a very sweaty person.

When working out I used to get very red-faced and possibly a bit blotchy, occasionally I looked like I might be having heart issues!!  However, after I turned 40 I noticed that I would sweat more than ever.

I didn’t see this as a particularly bad thing as it’s a good sign the body is getting rid of toxins in the body but as time went on I noticed that if I walked somewhere in my day-to-day life I felt like I needed a shower and that I, well, stunk!

Menopause body odour is a real thing, just like body odour during puberty.

Women often experience excess sweat or stress sweat and body odour changes during menopause due to the significant hormonal changes we are experiencing, it is not just about the hot flushes. 

The primary reason for increased sweating is the decline in estrogen levels. 

Estrogen helps regulate the body’s temperature control system. As estrogen levels drop, the hypothalamus (the part of the brain that regulates body temperature) becomes more sensitive to slight changes in body temperature.  This sensitivity often triggers hot flashes and night sweats, which are sudden feelings of intense heat that can cause profuse sweating. 

The hypothalamus may misinterpret minor increases in body temperature as being too hot, prompting the body to release heat through sweating. This is the body’s attempt to cool down, even if the temperature change is minimal or nonexistent.

Increased stress and anxiety can elevate cortisol levels. Cortisol, known as the stress hormone, can trigger the sweat glands, leading to increased sweating.

Changes in metabolism can also contribute to variations in body temperature regulation.

An increase in BMR can result in the body producing more heat, thereby increasing the likelihood of sweating.  Poor sleep quality can also exacerbate the body’s stress response, leading to more sweating.

This can all seem like a vicious cycle, you may be struggling with poor sleep, increased body fat and stress which are all contributing to increased sweating and thermal moments.
