Autumn Equinox Rituals to support your menopause journey.
The change of season from summer to autumn always makes me feel a little sad, it feels like this is an ending.
When we feel sad we focus on the more negative parts of our life and this seems to attract more negativity so we need a strategy that can bring joy and lift our spirits.
Autumn Equinox is a perfect time to do this as it represents the relaxation that comes after the action of summer.
The collective energy is about balance, light and dark, yin and yang and with some intention we can bring this into our life.
Not only do we have the Autumn Equinox (also known as the pagan celebration of Mabon), but the 1st of October brings the new moon in Libra, the universe seems to be aligning for us to take stock.
How does the Autumn Equinox make you feel?
There is a great deal of change at this time of year in general, not including recent events such as a new Prime Minister and New Monarch!
Summer has ended and the children have returned to school.
Our lives have slipped back into the old routine.
Gone are warm summer mornings, they are now getting darker and that crisp cool smell confirms we are heading towards winter.
If you suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (like me) you will know that feeling in the pit of your stomach that this time of year can create.
For me, it is the smell and it takes me back to that ‘back to school’ feeling, not that I hated school, I just loved that care-free summer feeling and being at home!
Protect your Immune System
Beware of your thoughts.
Not only can these ‘sad’ thoughts and feelings lead to anxiety and depression they have a negative effect on our immune system.
Happiness and relaxation support the immune system to work more effectively, protecting our body from infections that increase at this time of year.
Negative thoughts and feelings of hopelessness cause the body to experience stress which leads to hormone imbalance and affects the optimal function of the immune system.
During menopause our hormones are imbalanced anyway, therefore we need to intentionally protect ourselves where we can.
Autumn Equinox Rituals
We need to make room for yin and yang in our life, in our monthly cycle and over the course of a year
Mabon marks the last spoke in the wheel of the year, from this day until the winter solstice our days will become shorter.
Focus on letting go of self-destructive beliefs and behaviours.
Try some of the rituals;
- Gratitude – We can’t be happy all of the time BUT we can be grateful. What are you grateful for this season?
- Declutter – Restore balance in your home. I don’t know about you but during the summer my living space can be neglected when all I want to do is be outside or it is just too hot to clean like lots of this year’s summer.
- Re-organise your wardrobe – Bring out your autumn/winter clothes, and create a capsule wardrobe so you can be organised and know what you are going to wear each day.
- Preserve – There is such joy in tasing summer during winter. Make berry cordials, jams and gin to enjoy on cold dark nights.
- Decorate – Get outside and look for the first signs of autumn, collect some autumn foliage, branches of berries, acorns and conkers, and display these around your home. Make cosy areas with candles and throws.
- Garden – Plant bulbs for spring flowering, as they start to appear in February it will bring joy that Spring is on its way.
- Routine – Craft new routines to support your optimal health for the new season, overhaul meal plans, and change up your bedtime routine
Embracing Cyclical Living
As part of my framework for supporting women through menopause to balance their hormones and design an optimally healthy life, I use the cycles of the moon.
Embracing your cycle if you have one, or the moon cycle if you don’t, helps to reconnect you to your body.
This connection allows you to tune into the changes taking place during menopause and adjust your lifestyle to support your health and well-being.
Creating rituals that connect us to the changing seasons connects us to the world and helps us understand that everything changes, and nothing is permanent.
Working with the ebb and flow of life rather than fighting against it will lead to a healthy, balanced and harmonious lifestyle.
