Emotional Self-Care

Emotional Self-Care

Emotional Self-Care.

Just three months ago we were ringing in the New Year and planning how amazing 2020 was going to be.

How quickly things can change, a good life lesson for us all! This isn’t a negative statement, its just fact, things change.

Whether from good to bad or vice versa and we can adapt and change with them. How quickly and how well is all down to mindset.

This week I was going to share a post with you from a friend of mine in the Sports Massage industry. She was going to teach the overwhelming benefits of a professional massage in your self-care routine. Unfortunately, following the government’s guidance, she has temporarily closed her practice although if you would like to contact her for advice in the meantime you can via her website or Facebook.

With everything going on in the world your self-care may have slipped to the least important item on your current agenda BUT I can not stress enough, it is actually the MOST important thing you can do for yourself at this time to ensure you are able to take care of those around you and emerge the other side of this crisis ready to move forward.

So, what has changed for you in the last couple of weeks?

  • Working from home?
  • Partner or older children working from home?
  • School children now ‘home-schooling’
  • Working longer/extra hours as a key worker?

These changes along with fear and anxiety about what is going on in the world, the health of our loved ones and how you can continue to provide for your family can have a detriment effect on your wellbeing, this is without contracting COVID-19!

How can we protect our Emotional Wellbeing?

I am a big believer in trying not to worry about what you can’t control. I know, easier said than done, it does take practice, like everything.

Try looking at your life right now, today, what can you focus on?

  • Write a gratitude list, keep a gratitude journal to read when you feel low
  • Turn off the news, only watch important updates
  • Get your information from reliable sources
  • Limit your Social Media scrolling, unfollow people who increase your anxiety
  • Avoid going down the ‘rabbit hole’ with family and friends
  • Create an uplifting playlist to blast and dance it out! (for all you Grey’s fans ;))

Money worries are another massive cause of anxiety at this time, especially for the self-employed of which my husband and I are. As our freedoms are temporarily removed from us our earnings are out of our control and this is scary.

What can you control?

  • Contact your providers – Mortgage, Loans, Credit Cards, Subscriptions – Contact these people and make arrangements, don’t put your head in the sand.
  • Actions – i.e. the above list
  • Reactions – Be mindful of children and their anxieties at this time
  • Routine – a morning routine, an evening routine, regular exercise
  • Keeping set bedtimes for you and your family
  • Mealtimes – planning and creating healthy meals and snacks

I first created a morning routine after reading The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod. In his book, he explains how a good day starts with a good morning routine. The strategy is to perform what he calls, SAVERS,

  • S – Silence
  • A – Affirmations
  • V – Visualisation
  • E – Exercise
  • R – Reading
  • S – Scribing (journaling)

by spending just a minute on each you can start your self-development journey even if you don’t have TIME. I have found this a great way to focus my mind and start my day productively.

This leads me nicely on to April’s topic, Organisation, one of my favourite topics haha! If it isn’t one of yours I hope over the coming weeks I can inspire you to get on board and see the benefits.
