Reconnect to Food with Nutrition for Your Moon Sign

Reconnect to Food with Nutrition for Your Moon Sign

Reconnect to Food with Nutrition for Your Moon Sign.

I am sure if I asked you your star sign, also known as your sun sign because it is the zodiac sign the sun was in when you were born, you would be able to tell me, even if you aren’t interested in astrology.

What about your moon sign or your rising sign?  Probably not, unless this subject has interested you in the past.

Do you resonate with your star sign?

Many people don’t and it is easy to see why, as this is only a small part of the picture, many people have the same star sign and can be complete opposites.  My brother and I are both Gemini and are very different in many ways.

  • Your sun sign represents your sense of self, it is related to your spiritual self.
  • Your rising sign is the sign that was coming up over the horizon as you were born and represents the external, physicality, structure and resilience.
  • Your moon sign, the zodiac sign the moon was in when you were born represents the internal, circadian rhythm and hormones.

The moon changes daily and reflects this daily change in your energy including mood, appetite, and fluid levels.

The menopause transition provides us with the perfect opportunity to reconnect with ourselves.

Discover who you have become as life has shaped you over the past 40ish years.  Part of getting to know yourself and honour your body and your health is releasing outside influences over your body autonomy, ditching restrictive diets and discovering what your body needs to thrive.

In my practice, I show women how to use the moon cycle if they no longer have a menstrual cycle due to menopause, irregular periods or contraception.

The next level to this is discovering your moon sign and exploring the nutritional gesture of this and how it may align with your lifestyle.

In this post, I will share a brief outline of the nutrition gesture of each sign.  You can download your free birth chart HERE.

Nutrition for Your Moon Sign

We’ll start at the beginning of the astrological calendar, Aries.

  • Aries moon sign anatomy focuses on the head, brain, cranial nerves, eyes, teeth, jaw as well as the adrenal glands.  I wrote about adrenal health during April and you can read these posts HERE.

Keeping the Aries anatomy healthy requires amino acids and fatty acids.  These provide the building blocks of protein to make neurotransmitters and hormones.

Include fatty fish, butter, nuts and seeds in your diet as well as leafy greens and berries.  Eat protein at every meal from real food sources such as full-fat dairy and eggs along with animal and plant proteins.  Download my protein cheat sheet HERE.

  • Taurus moon signs are all about pleasure and rhythmic structure.  Taurus anatomy supports the brain through the cervical vertebrae and neck, the throat, vocal cords, thyroid gland and the senses.  When Taurus is nourished its energy, emotions and digestion are free.

Taurus focuses on balancing blood sugar levels, and consuming enough fibre (how much is enough?  (Download the fibre cheat sheet HERE) and being metabolically adapted – switching between glucose and fat burning easily.

Focus on indulgent foods that bring pleasure and satiety, real butter, full-fat cheese, whole eggs and real sugar.  Take this pleasure a step further by using your favourite dishes and creating a lovely atmosphere when you eat with music and candles.

  • Gemini Moon anatomy is about sending messages around the body. The nervous system, tubes, tunnels, capillaries, speech and hearing.  Gemini loves variety, the goal is to support this need with a basic pattern of nourishment that can be adapted depending on the fancy of the day.

Basic recipes that can be changed with a few simple ingredient swaps are great ideas such as soup, overnight oats, granola, and stir-fries.  Gemini also likes to use kitchen gadgets and prep methods to speed up the process of completing the meal.

  • Cancer moon sign anatomy covers all our basic needs focusing on vital organs or places that hold nourishing substances such as the spinal cord.  Cancer could have the perfect diet and still suffer from digestive-related symptoms because of emotional or environmental stressors.

Comfort foods are medicine for Cancer moon signs but this also means finding comfort in the body and eating in a place and at a pace that feels relaxed.

Protecting the digestive fire of this water sign is important with breathing techniques, attending to emotional needs, at meal times avoid iced drinks, focusing on soft foods to support digestion, as well as using flavour.  Foods that are bitter or sour have a drying effect on the digestive system, this could include cruciferous vegetables, endive and kale and sour fresh fruits such as berries, cherries citrus and green apples.

  • Leo rules the sun of the body.  Leo moon sign anatomy is the heart and everything to do with it.

Heart food both physical and emotional is the foundation of Leo nutrition.  A Leo plate is colourful and as the hottest sign of the zodiac, the foods should be cooling such as lightly cooked or raw foods.

Use lighter proteins and healthy plant fats such as avocado, olive oil, coconut, nuts and seeds.

  • Virgo moons foundation of health is in the gut.  Virgo is an earth sign, grounded and connected to the gut feeling therefore Virgo nutrition focuses on the gut-brain axis for good health.

To prevent nutritional overwhelm, keep meals simple.  Five ingredients or less is perfect.  Virgo thrives when food is warm, well-cooked and easy to digest.  This sign might be better avoiding spicy food.

Although all zodiac signs can suffer from food allergies or sensitivities Virgo tends to be the most susceptible.  Nutrient-dense liquid nutrition such as soups, stews and broths can help bring back balance if this is an issue.

  • The Libra moon anatomy is to provide stability.  Homeostasis or balance isn’t static, it is a constant push and pull, ebb and flow. It is the continuous rise and fall of hormones, fluid and blood volume that is the focus here.

Libra time falls at the equinox wherever you are in the world, a time of balance between light and dark, night and day and it is this balance we strive for in our lives.

Create balanced nutrition with well-balanced meals (protein, healthy fat and carbohydrate) or balanced flavours, bitter, salty, savoury, sweet and sour.

  • Scorpio moons anatomy is about transformation.  It distils energy, waste and by-products until they are in a form that can exit the body safely such as sweat glands, the nose, reproductive function, the bladder and the colon.

Intestinal health is a priority.  Focus on fibre to regulate bowel movement as well as feeding friendly bacteria.

Hormone imbalances can be an issue for Scorpio moon signs.  Whether this is a high or low issue the root cause is generally the gut.

  • Sagittarius moons anatomy focuses on the legs, pelvis, lower spine and lower nerves.  The sign of Sagittarius is all about exploration, classic Sagittarian food is an exciting fusion of new foods, flavours and cultures.

Nerve-related hip, lower back and leg pain is common for this sign.  Including anti-inflammatory foods may be helpful.

  • Capricorn moon sign anatomy gives our flesh shape.  Bones, connective tissue, ligaments, teeth and skin are the nutritional focus of this sign.

Feed your bones with dark green vegetables, egg yolks, fish, sea vegetables and nuts.   Support the skin and connective tissues with vitamin C for collagen production.  To increase collagen use bone broth from fish and animal sources and organ meats.

  • Aquarius moon anatomy involves all the electrical charges and currents in the body as well as oxygenation of the blood and body.

The gesture of Aquarius nutrition is autonomy.  Embracing the power to honour the nutritional needs of your body and not some outside force such as a restrictive diet.

Avoid electrical disruptors such as artificial sweeteners or flavourings and other ultra-processed foods.

  • For Pisces moon signs the anatomy is fluids such as the lymphatic system, immune system, white blood cells and the energetic, emotional and spiritual bodies.

The gesture here is freedom.  Pisces thrive when they have a healthy relationship with food knowing they are allowed to eat what they want, they have permission and freedom to choose the foods that nourish their body.

Pisces moon signs can find they are sensitive to mould and mycotoxins.  Small amounts can be found in nuts seeds and grain and may need to be rinsed.  Nuts can be soaked and then dried at a low temperature in the oven.

Rebalancing Your Element

Each zodiac sign falls into one of four elements.

These elements are a combination of four qualities, you may be familiar with these in terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine or Ayurvedic Medicine.

  • HOT – Speeds things up and energises but too much heat is inflammatory, agitating and can cause dryness
  • COLD – Slows things down. Too much cold can bring depression and fatigue to the body. Excess cold creates moisture.
  • DRY – Separates things and brings definition, clarity and solidity to the body.  Too much can cause stiffness and become deficient in nutrients
  • MOIST/WET/DAMP – Moisture mixes things together, the body can become pliable, soft and relaxed but too much erodes boundaries making it vulnerable

Each element in balance is a combination of two qualities.

HOT + WET =  Air signs (Gemini, Libra and Aquarius)

HOT + DRY =  Fire sign. (Aries, Leo and Sagittarius)

COLD + DRY = Earth Signs (Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn)

COLD + WET = Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces)

When out of balance the focus is to address the imbalance through food.

For instance, if you are a fire sign and your fire is burning out of control, everything is an emergency or you are experiencing acid reflux or your nervous system is overstimulated then you would aim to decrease the fire with cooling herbal teas, fresh fruit juices and slow burning foods like brown rice.

If however, the opposite was true you would want to increase fire using warming spices such as black pepper or cumin seeds and quick-burning foods.

Nutrition for Your Moon Sign in Practice

You may have heard of the Zodiac Diet but Body Astrology is not a diet, it’s not about pigeon-holeing you into one zodiac sign as there is a little of each sign in every birth chart.

Body astrology can be used to delve deeper into food sensitivities helping to identify which organs or body systems may need support.

What I love about nutrition for your moon sign and body astrology is that it allows you to get curious and think outside of diet culture norms.

It allows you to look at an area of your natal chart and question, “Is this me?”  It encourages reconnection to what your body is telling you and how you respond to its needs.

Never is this more important than through the hormonal upheaval of the menopause transition.
