Apple Pie is a classic dessert pie that I am sure springs to mind when I mention British Pie Week.

In honour of British Pie Week, I thought I would share the Organic Apple Pie Recipe with you, you might also want to bake it in time for Mother’s Day in the UK this coming Sunday (10th March 2024).

Why not just go out and buy an apple pie?

In my work of supporting women on their journey through and post-menopause I speak to many women who are overwhelmed and exhausted with barely enough energy to get through a day of repetitive tasks, let alone adding the expectation of The Best Homemade Organic Classic Apple Pie Recipe!

I get it, and if this is how you are currently feeling, picking up a shop-bought apple pie is not the end of the world.

However, once you have overcome the challenges of menopause by getting to the root cause of the symptoms you are experiencing you will discover you have more energy and more motivation for life in general and if you are inclined to bake you will want to nourish your body with only the best ingredients.

Being able to control the amount of toxic ingredients that go into your food is a very liberating feeling.

Ingredients for the Organic Apple Pie Recipe

Here is a list of basic ingredients needed for an Organic Apple Pie Recipe.

You may want to add a different spice or maybe some dried fruit or berries.  My advice is to go with what feels right, as I tell my children when they ask me how much seasoning or spice when they are cooking ‘listen to the voice of your ancestors’.  Sorry if that’s not much help, they don’t think it is either haha!  What I mean is, live a little! Use your intuition.

  • 500g of Plain All Purpose Flour
  • 250g of Cold Butter – the rule of thumb is half the amount of fat to flour
  • 125g Caster Sugar – If you want to make this a lower-sugar dish, just omit the sugar here or add just a couple of tablespoons instead.
  • 1 Large Egg
  • 1KG Apples
  • 100g Caster Sugar
  • 1 Tbsp Cornflour
  • ½ tsp Cinnamon

NB: I like to use coconut sugar in place of caster sugar because coconut sugar is less processed with a higher micronutrient content.

This recipe makes one large pie to serve approximately 8 people.  Use a 20-22cm loose bottom pie dish, greased with a little butter and dusted with flour.

Preheat your oven to 180 degrees (160 degrees for fan-assisted ovens).

Start by making the pastry.

In a large bowl sift the flour, cut the butter into small cubes and add to the flour.  Rub the butter into the flour using your fingertips until it looks like fine bread crumbs.

Next, add the egg, and bring the mixture together.  You will need some ice-cold water to help make a dough.  Use a tablespoon at a time as you down want a wet and sticky pie dough.

You can use a food processor if you prefer just make sure not to over-process the dough or you will end up with a tough pie shell.

Once the dough has come together, wrap it and let it rest in the fridge.  I like to use beeswax paper but you can use cling film or parchment paper.

Whilst the pie dough is resting, you can prepare the apple filling.

Chop your apples into apple slices and set aside in a large mixing bowl.  You can choose to add a couple of tablespoons of lemon juice and rub this into the pieces to stop them from changing colour.

Mix the sugar, cornflour, and cinnamon in a small bowl and set aside.

You are now ready to assemble your apple pie.

Take the pastry from the fridge and remove approximately one-third, this will be the lid.

On a lightly floured surface use a rolling pin to roll out the remaining two-thirds until it is big enough to line your pie dish.

Gently lift the rolled pastry and place it over the pie dish pressing the pastry into the edges, use any excess pastry hanging over the edges to patch up any tears or holes.

Place your apple pieces into the lined dish making sure they are evening distributed.  Sprinkle with the sugar mixture.

Roll the remaining pastry until it is large enough to cover the pie.  Wet the edges of the pie with a little water before placing the lid on top of the apple mixture.  Press the edges together to seal the pie.

Trim the edges of the pastry with a sharp knife then make a couple of slits at the mount of the pie to allow the steam to escape whilst baking.

You can use any excess dough to make simple shapes to add to the top of your pie for decoration.  Brush with egg wash or milk and sprinkle with a little brown sugar.

Bake your pie on a baking sheet in a preheated oven for approximately 45 minutes until golden brown on top.

Serving and Storing Your Apple Pie

Wait for your pie to cool before serving, this will allow the contents to settle and ensure you don’t burn your tongue!

Use your favourite pie plate, slice and serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, pouring cream or my favourite choice which is clotted cream.

Your pie will last up to 2 days in an airtight container at room temperature or 4 days in the fridge.  You could even freeze the entire pie or a few slices for a future treat when you don’t want to make a whole pie.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are so many organic apple pie recipes each a little different from the next and you can choose to tweak yours however you wish.

I have received a few questions which I will share below because there is no such thing as a stupid question and if someone else has asked it, it might help you too.

  • Should you cook apples before putting them in a pie?

There is no need to do this as apples cook quite quickly and you don’t want to be left with a puree.   Cooking them in the pie leaves some texture in the filling.

  • What are the three best apples for apple pie?

In my opinion, I like tart apples to complement the sweet crust pastry.  So I choose Brambly, Granny Smith Apples or a Pink Lady variety of apples but if I have random apples that need using up in my fridge I will take what is there rather than waste them.

  • What if I don’t have organic ingredients?

You can make this homemade apple pie recipe with non-organic ingredients.  What I will impress upon you is to buy the best ingredients that you can afford.  Organic ingredients are non-GMO, they have been grown without chemical pesticides and use natural processing methods.  All of this supports your health and well-being naturally.

It is especially important during menopause to avoid toxic chemicals in the environment that can enter the body in many ways, especially via the food system.

The impact of these chemicals on the body can become the root cause of menopause symptoms.

The more you can cook your food from scratch the better you can control what is going into your body.

I hope you enjoy this organic apple pie recipe. Happy Baking!
