Menopausal Transition: Stages, Signs & Symptoms.

What if the menopausal transition wasn’t a problem to fix but a portal to expansion?

For generations, women have been told this phase marks the end of vitality, fertility, or desirability, but in truth, it’s a threshold, a sacred turning point where your body begins to speak more clearly than ever before.

The shifting hormone levels, the irregular periods, the mood changes or the weight gain are not signs of decline.

They are signals inviting you to return home to yourself.

In my work with women, I call this season the space between worlds.

It mirrors the rhythms found in nature, such as the waning moon or autumn giving way to winter, the moment before stillness when new growth quietly begins beneath the surface.

The SHIFT System was born from this understanding that a woman’s wellbeing is cyclical, not linear.

Each stage of your life, like each phase of the moon, carries its own purpose and wisdom.

Perimenopause, then, is not a loss of balance but an opportunity to realign.

It’s the body’s way of asking for deeper nourishment, slower living, and more intentional care.

When you learn to listen rather than resist, this transition becomes a profound invitation to expand your life, not shrink it.

Understanding the Stages of the Menopausal Transition

Every woman’s menopausal transition unfolds uniquely, yet there’s a rhythm that connects us all.

Just as the moon moves through its phases, our hormones ebb and flow through seasons of change.

In early perimenopause, subtle hormonal shifts begin to influence your menstrual cycle, perhaps a shorter luteal phase, lighter or heavier bleeding, or a few missed periods.

It’s like the first leaves beginning to turn, change is happening, but life is still in full bloom.

As you move into late perimenopause, these fluctuations intensify.

Irregular periods, night sweats, sleep problems and changes in mood or energy may become more noticeable.

This is the body’s way of realigning, releasing old patterns that no longer serve your next chapter.

Finally, menopause itself, which is twelve consecutive months without a menstrual period, marks not an ending, but a new beginning.

A quieter, wiser season where energy is redirected inward, clarity strengthens, and a new kind of freedom emerges, the Wise Woman or The Crone, which used to mean The Crown.

Understanding these stages allows you to meet your body with curiosity rather than resistance, to see each shift in hormone levels as part of a deeply intelligent recalibration, guiding you toward balance and renewal.

These two books helped me, a naturally Type A and action-focused woman, to reconnect with my feminine energy. They guided me to honour what was happening in my body during the menopausal transition, tap into ancestral wisdom, and relearn the connection to cycles and rhythms that patriarchal culture has often made us forget

Common Perimenopausal Symptoms and What They’re Trying to Tell You

Symptoms are the body’s language, not its rebellion.

When we view hot flushes, mood swings, or sleep disturbances as communication rather than inconvenience, we begin to understand their deeper meaning.

  • Hot flushes & night sweats: Your body’s inner fire is recalibrating. These waves of heat are often tied to stress, metabolism, and liver function, your body signalling that it’s time to slow down and cool the internal flame.
  • Mood swings & emotional sensitivity: As estrogen and progesterone fluctuate, your nervous system becomes more finely tuned. It’s calling for stillness, reflection, and emotional release, not suppression.
  • Irregular periods: The shifting rhythm of your cycle mirrors your changing needs. Your body is finding a new tempo, asking you to rest more deeply and nourish more intentionally.  You no longer need your energy for reproduction.
  • Sleep disturbances: Wakefulness in the night can feel frustrating, yet it’s also an invitation to listen to your inner world. What needs to be processed, released, or rebalanced?

My unique SHIFT System embraces these symptoms as signposts.

Each step holds a message about where energy, nourishment, or restoration is needed.

When we stop fighting menopause symptoms and start responding with awareness, healing begins.

From Chaos to Clarity: The Role of Lifestyle Changes

Every symptom offers an opportunity to restore harmony through simple, intentional lifestyle changes, and these are different for everyone.

While hormone levels fluctuate beyond our conscious control, the way we live, eat, move, and rest can profoundly influence how we experience this transition.

This is where the philosophy behind SHIFT truly shines by creating small, aligned changes that ripple through every layer of wellbeing:

  • Nourishment: Choose a healthy diet rich in real, whole foods, proteins, and quality fat to support stable energy and balanced hormone levels.
  • Movement: Regular physical activity aligned with your enjoyment, such as walking, yoga, strength work, builds bone density and steadies mood. It’s not about control, but connection.
  • Rest: Prioritise sleep rituals that calm the nervous system and improve quality of life. Dim the lights, reduce screens, breathe deeply, let your body trust night again.
  • Emotional flow: Unprocessed stress can intensify symptoms. Create moments for stillness, journaling, and reconnection with your inner rhythm.

When we integrate these small acts of care into daily life, we move from chaos to clarity, from reacting to responding and begin to experience the menopausal transition as a natural rhythm of renewal.

The Hidden Gifts of the Transition

There’s a quiet magic within this season, one that is often overlooked in the rush to “fix” what feels uncomfortable.

Yet for many perimenopausal women, the greatest gift of this phase is the clarity that emerges when the noise falls away.

As hormonal changes peel back layers of conditioning and overdoing, your body begins to ask different questions:

  • Who am I becoming?
  • What do I truly need?
  • Where do I want to place my energy?

This is not just biology, it’s evolution.

The same cyclical intelligence that governs nature also governs you.

The SHIFT System was designed to honour that connection: how each phase of a woman’s life mirrors the waxing and waning of the moon.

As your hormones quieten, your intuition grows louder. You become more anchored, discerning, and deeply aligned with your natural rhythms.

Menopause is not a loss, it’s a liberation.

A time to shed old expectations and rediscover your authentic self, guided by the wisdom your body has been whispering all along.

How to Begin Turning Symptoms into Signals of Growth

Transformation begins with awareness and the decision to listen

You don’t need to overhaul your life or chase quick fixes. You simply need to start paying attention.

Here are a few ways to begin:

  1. Tune in: Keep a simple journal of your symptoms, energy, mood, and menstrual patterns. Notice what the body is communicating.
  2. Nourish: Focus on real food, ditch ultra-processed food and ingredients, create meals that stabilise blood sugar and support steady hormone levels.
  3. Move with intention: Choose forms of physical activity that replenish rather than deplete.
  4. Create space: Reduce the invisible load. Rest is medicine.
  5. Reframe: When symptoms arise, ask, What is my body asking of me?

Each of these small shifts invites your system into harmony, which is the foundation of the SHIFT System itself.

It’s not about doing more, but aligning more deeply with the natural flow of your body and the natural world around you.

When you begin to view your menopausal transition this way, symptoms lose their sting. They become gentle teachers, guiding you toward a fuller, freer, and more vibrant

Closing Reflection: The Portal Opens When You Listen

Every woman crosses this threshold differently, yet we all arrive at the same truth: the menopausal transition isn’t something to survive.

It’s an awakening.

When we pause long enough to listen, we realise our bodies aren’t breaking down, they’re breaking through.

Each hot flush, mood swing, or restless night is a whisper from within, guiding you toward deeper alignment and freedom.

This is the wisdom of nature moving through you, the same rhythm that turns the tides, grows new life, and brings light back after darkness.

You are not separate from that rhythm. You are that rhythm.

So rather than fighting your symptoms, begin to translate them.

They’re not problems, they’re messages, each one guiding you back to balance and possibility.
